Original McDermid Studios Photo - Ken MacKenzie with personalized notation and signature on the reverse.
This photo was a part of the amazing Ken MacKenzie estate collection of documents, photos and ephemera discovered in a Storage Tote in early 2000. This collection of items is available for your perusal as a part of my online exhibit on this website. I have decided to part with some items in which I have doubles of, including this tremendous photo.
Ken MacKenzie was GM, Coach and owner of the WCHL Edmonton Eskimos from 1920-26. The team would reach the Stanley Cu0 Final in 1922-23 vs the Ottawa Senators. MacKenzie served in WWI and was wounded in action. He would go on to become involved in hockey and would lead the Edmonton Eskimos professional hockey club to great success during their time in the Western Canada Hockey League. After his time in hockey he got involved in the Canadian Fur Trade.
This photo is extremely rare and the only such example I have seen for sale, other than the others I purchased as a part of this MacKenzie collection. The photo is in mint condition. The notation on the back includes a large scripted light pencil signature "MacKenzie" along with a darker pencil notation " McDermid Studios Edmonton, Alta Regimental -no-2298303 50th Battalion Canadian". Upon close examination of his handwriting and signatures in the other items included in this collection, I conclude that this signature and notation were indeed performed by Ken MacKenzie.
The photo was encased in a oval cabinet from the period that is missing it's gate fold cover. I will include the cabinet with the photo.
